Use it up, wear it out, make it do, do without. This was a common proverb from more frugal days. In earlier generations, we were not so quick to dispose of items. We mended them, patched them, and re-purposed them. Rag rugs have their genesis in times of hardship. Today these sturdy rugs are much valued for their charm and durability.

During garage sale season we hit the road in search of old bed sheets. We bring them home, launder them, cut them into strips and then crochet them into rugs. Our pricing is very low compared to the time and effort we put into these rugs, but since we love making them, and since we crochet them during relaxation time, we are content with prices we charge.

When looking at our prices, keep in mind that each rug uses 2 to 4 bed sheets. They are one of a kind using what we have on hand. We crochet these very tightly for a thick and durable rug. All rugs are machine wash gentle and machine dry or lay flat to dry. We remove them from the dryer while still slightly damp and lay flat to finish drying. Because some fabrics fray more than others you may notice some fraying after washing. This does not harm the rug, nor does it detract from durability. We find that it adds charm and character to the rug.

From the cutting of the strips to the final edging, it takes us about a week to complete one of these rugs.
